Debian’s java-package is excellent.

sudo apt-get install java-package

Read the docs:

vim /usr/share/doc/java-package/README.Debian

I went for the IBM sdk. They want you to register. Use bugmenot.com in this case.

frodo$ make-jpkg IBMJava2-SDK-142.tgz

frodo$ sudo dpkg -i ibm-j2sdk1.4_1.4.2_i386.deb

frodo$ java -version

java version "1.4.2"

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2)

Classic VM (build 1.4.2, J2RE 1.4.2 IBM build cxia32142-20050609 (JIT enabled: jitc))
